[ARCHIVED] G.A.R. Cemetery to Host Annual Memeorial Day Ceremony

The City of Miami G.A.R. Cemetery is pleased to host their annual Memorial Day Ceremony for the public on Monday, May 30th. Again, this year the Ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. G.A.R. Cemetery Director; Kim Horn, expressed that the new time that G.A.R. Cemetery staff implemented last year was a success, and we will continue to hold the ceremony at 9:00 a.m. as long as it continues to accommodate the public. Immediately following the ceremony, Brown-Winters Funeral Home will be serving refreshments in the gazebo.

This year's ceremony will be conducted by the American Legion (Post #147), Marine Corps League (Northeastern Oklahoma Detachment), and the 4 State Friends of Veterans. David Rountree, City of Miami and Associate Piper for the City of Tulsa Pipes and Drums, will perform a patriotic ensemble and Amazing Grace; Amanda Cole will be the bugler, and will sing our National Anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner". We are also honored to have Stephen L. Maxson, Sr. Vice Commandant of the Marine Corps League, Department of Oklahoma, as this year's guest speaker.

Scout Leader; John Landers, organizes the local Scouts and volunteers to help each year with the placement of approximately 2000 flags on Veteran's graves over Memorial Day weekend. Cemetery Office Manager; Nancy Bro stated, "The local Scouts always do an amazing job placing the flags upon our Military Veteran's markers. The spirit and enthusiasm of the Scouts and volunteers gives me such an overwhelming sense of pride. Also, anyone may come to the cemetery office and pick up flags to place on the graves of their family members as well."
