[ARCHIVED] G.A.R. Cemetery to Host Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

- The City of Miami G.A.R. Cemetery is pleased to host a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27th at 10:00 am on the cemetery grounds. Brown-Winters Funeral Home will provide lunch in the cemetery gazebo immediately following the ceremony. The public is invited to attend.

This year’s ceremony will be conducted by the American Legion (Post #147), Marine Corp League (Northeastern Oklahoma Detachment), Vietnam Era Veterans of America (Chapter 277), and the 4 State Friends of Veterans. David Rountree, City of Miami and the Associate Pipers for the City of Tulsa Pipes and Drums, will perform a Patriotic Ensemble and Amazing Grace, and Amanda Cole will perform Taps. Clint Huffman, Vietnam Veteran, will be the keynote speaker.

Brown-Winters Funeral Home has provided lunch on Memorial Day at G.A.R. for the past four years.

Local Boy Scouts will help with the placement of approximately 2000 flags on veteran’s graves over Memorial Day weekend. G.A.R. plans to have a flag on the grave of every veteran by Memorial Day 2013. Families can also come to the cemetery office to request flags to place on the graves of their family members.

Anyone interested in adopting a flag, as part of the Adopt-A-Flag Program, can obtain an adoption form at or can contact the cemetery office for more information. The cost to Adopt-A-Flag is a onetime fee of $50.00, and the flag will be placed along cemetery roadways during designated holidays.

Cemetery Supervisor Kim Horn said, “The cemetery staff looks forward to and works toward Memorial Day every year. We want to invite the public to attend the ceremony and lunch. It truly is a special day of remembrance and fellowship spent with family and friends.”
