Construction is expected to stretch into April, 2015, and will mark the first opportunity for the City of Miami and Ottawa County (District 3) to work together on a bridge construction project. The joint venture is made possible through a May, 2014, interlocal agreement approved by the Ottawa County Commission and the Miami City Council. The agreement capitalizes on 74 O.S. Section 1008 which permits local governmental units to make the most efficient use of their powers by enabling them to cooperate with other localities on the basis of mutual advantage.
Rockdale Bridge, built in 1918 and reconstructed in 1960, was determined to be structurally deficient in a 2013 inspection conducted by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Construction costs are estimated to be $675,000.
