(Miami, OK) – The history of the City of Miami and Ottawa County is in many ways buried in the past at G.A.R. Cemetery. The cemetery recently launched a new City website application that includes online burial records and access to share information about your loved ones. This will help uncover the memories and histories of the individuals resting in G.A.R. and will publish them in a searchable history database on the City website.
You can visit the City of Miami Website www.miamiokla.net to search the burial records and locate a map to reference the grave you are searching for. Once reaching the website, go to Departments/Cemetery/Online Burial Records. You will also be able to view any memories, stories, photos and videos shared by friends and family. Submissions can be made directly through the memorial pages on the website. All submissions are approved by Cemetery Staff before being posted.
Also available on the website is a history walking tour packet that includes a map of the notable and famous burials at the cemetery, including Booger Red, John Beaver, Cal Campbell, and George L. Coleman, Sr. “Now, we are asking local community members to contribute to this history project. We are welcoming anyone in the community to send us information or pictures of someone buried in our cemetery,” said Kim Horn, G.A.R. Cemetery Director. “Together, we can collect and preserve the history of our community. Every life story should be remembered.”
“As visitors search our online records, they share memories, stories and timeless photos on the memorial pages of their loved ones.” Horn added. “This new application is enabling families to connect with our cemetery in new ways, bringing history to life.”
G.A.R. Cemetery’s project to computerize their records and document the legacies of local community members is powered by webCemetery.com, a cemetery technology company in Pennsylvania working with hundreds of cemeteries across the United States.
