Public Utilities
Overview
The Public Utilities Department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and management of the Electric and Right of Way Services, Water Production and Distribution Services, Wastewater Treatment Services, the Stormwater Phase II Management Program, and Miami's Airport.

The Public Utilities Department promotes a good departmental working environment as well as ensures accurate communication with the citizens in Miami.

Services Provided
The department ensures that each division has the manpower, equipment, and budget to operate their daily duties:
  • Electricity provided with 110 miles of primary distribution lines and three substations
  • Operation of all Traffic Signals
  • Installation and maintenance of Area Lights
  • Right of Way (ROW) for street easements and power line clearance
  • Treatment of safe drinking water in accordance of local, state and federal requirements
    • Replacing or repairing water mains
    • Installation of new potable water lines
    • Sampling and testing of drinking water
    • Service and maintenance of five water towers
    • Service and maintenance of eight water wells
    • Water pressure analysis and improvements
  • Pollution Control treats an average of 2.0 MGD (million gallons per day) for all liquids that enter the sanitary sewer system infrastructure and discharges the treated water into the Neosho River
    • Wastewater treatment of approximately 200 miles of sewer lines
    • 7 days per week of sampling and testing
    • Septic Receiving
    • Significant Industrial Users Pretreatment Program
    • Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) inspections
  • Stormwater's goal of the SWMP is to support the protection of fish, wildlife, and recreation in and on our waterbodies

    • Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination
    • Construction Site Runoff Control
    • Post-Construction Runoff Control
    • Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping
    • Stormwater Water Flow Issues and Analysis
  • The Miami Regional Airport covers approximately 300 acres and has an asphalt runway designated 17/35, which is 5,020 feet long by 100 feet wide
